Light-Fueled Microscopic Walkers
The first microscopic artificial walker equipped with liquid-crystalline elastomer muscle is reported. The walker is fabricated by direct laser writing, is smaller than any known living terrestrial creatures, and is capable of several autonomous locomotions on different surfaces.
متن کاملArtificial tribotactic microscopic walkers: walking based on friction gradients.
Friction, the resistive force between two surfaces sliding past each other, is at the core of a wide diversity of locomotion schemes. While such schemes are well described for homogeneous environments, locomotion based on friction in inhomogeneous environments has not received much attention. Here we introduce and demonstrate the concept of tribotaxis, a motion that is guided by gradients in th...
متن کاملMetamaterials: Snapping Mechanical Metamaterials under Tension (Adv. Mater. 39/2015).
By exploiting snap-through instabilities, D. Pasini and co-workers design a damage-tolerant mechanical metamaterial that snaps sequentially under tension, thereby accommodating a very large deformation up to 150%. On page 5931, they describe how the nonlinear mechanical response of the metamaterial can be robustly programmed by tuning the architecture of its unit cell.
متن کاملThe parasellar dura mater and adjacent dura: a microsurgical and light microscopic study in fetal materials
Introduction The external membrane which invests the brain is called the cranial dura mater. It consists of a periosteal layer, which is rich in blood and lymphatic vessels and nerves, and an inner layer named the meningeal layer. At certain places the periosteal and meningeal layers are separated to form the dural venous sinuses. This is the typical description of the cranial dura mater [1–15]...
متن کاملRelative unidirectional translation in an artificial molecular assembly fueled by light.
Motor molecules present in nature convert energy inputs, such as a chemical fuel or incident photons of light, into directed motion and force biochemical systems away from thermal equilibrium. The ability not only to control relative movements of components in molecules but also to drive their components preferentially in one direction relative to each other using versatile stimuli is one of th...
